Macklemore wins Best Rap Album, students unhappy

In case you missed it, Macklemore married a bunch of people at the Grammys, won four of his six nominations and apologized to Kendrick Lamar for taking Best Rap Album. The Clipper found out what the students think.

Jacob McCallum “never really got into Macklemore” but thought that he was “rapping about a cause” as opposed to Lamar, who “was rapping about his life.” He felt that Lamar deserved Best Rap Album. Macklemore won “because, well, it’s Macklemore.”

McCallum’s friend Adam Hinze felt like Lamar deserved Best Rap Album.

This trend continued with everyone we talked to – not a single person felt like Macklemore deserved Best Rap Album.

Chayla Tavares felt like Macklemore’s fame affects Seattle’s perception of him. She liked him “before he went mainstream.” Student Cora Leach agreed, and said that everyone was “blowing him out of proportion” and that “his hype is big … but what made him famous isn’t who he is.”

Michael Dewalt felt that real rappers don’t win Grammys, and that “Macklemore is all hype.”

A group conversation ensued between Dewalt, Victor Cleveland, James Cassel and Preston Landon after this comment from Dewalt.

A conversation about rap music talent and credibility had emerged amongst the group of friends. Cleveland made the point the Grammys are about what you’ve done. He pointed out that Nas never won a Grammy, and the closest Nas got to an award was writing “Get Jiggy With It” for Will Smith, so does that make Nas a bad rapper? Then Cassel said, “Kendrick has better lyrics,” stating that Lamar is “colossal … he killed it.” However, Cassel defended Macklemore, saying that he had a better resume for the Grammys, but still saw Lamar as the better rapper.

They went into the fan base of the two MCs, they said that Macklemore has more of a white and indie audience and gets an edge for his progressive stance on gay marriage.

“Macklemore doesn’t hit a street audience,” said Cassel “Kendrick’s audience is more solid.”  Cassel added that he listens to Lamar every day.

The group also felt that Macklemore is respected for his rapping more-so than artists like Drake, which could have led to his Grammy victory because Macklemore does something different without losing credibility. But DeWalt wondered, “do people in the hood listen to that?”

“Everybody hates him, but he’s winning” remarked Cleveland, “he’s going to have more pressure for his next album.”

Cassel remarked that “The Heist” will be on people’s mind for a long time, it will be a classic album.

“All I know is that Kendrick should have won,” said Preston Landon, “You’re not going to catch me buying his [Macklemore’s] album.”

Some students, however, did not particularly care about the Grammys.

“Macklemore is a fucking idiot,” said student Don Glenn. “The Grammys are pornography for people … it’s all fake.” Glenn is a full time student, father of two and doesn’t have time for pop culture. He mostly listens to classic rock, but also Lady GaGa.

Despite our best efforts, we couldn’t find anyone who felt that Macklemore deserved his Grammy win. Not even Macklemore.

So I’m carrying a bass drum up a wheelchair ramp in a dingy little venue in downtown Everett. I have no idea where I’m going or what I’m doing. Needless to say, I’ve never played at a paying concert before and I’m incredibly nervous. Looking over my shoulder, I notice a familiar face. To my surprise, I see the guy who sold me my textbooks a week before.
